SHALOM! READ ME FIRST!

Welcome to the registration for our event Approaching the Holy Mountain: Spiritual Preparations for Shavuot, led by Reb Simcha Raphael.

DATE: Wednesdays, May 7, 14, 21
TIME: 8pm ET / 5pm PT
LOCATION: Live on Zoom
COST: $54

Session 1: SINAI REVELATION & THE MYTHIC JOURNEY: GUIDELINES FOR LIFE IN TRANSITION
According to our sages, both Written and Oral Torah were revealed to the Jewish people on
Shavuot. In this presentation we shall look at an array of Midrashic texts on Sinai, to help us
understand the enigmatic splendor of the Sinai moment, and discover how we ourselves can
receive revelation and the ever-unfolding Torah in our lives, relevant to living our lives in
these difficult times.

Session 2: TRANSCENDING TRAUMA: MYTHIC DIMENSIONS OF THE BOOK OF RUTH
The Book of Ruth—read traditionally on Shavuot— tells a tale of people who are uprooted
and facing an unknown future. Today, we are all like Ruth and Naomi, dealing with loss and
transition, and trying to hear our calling towards deeper fulfillment. Through an exploration
of Ruth’s story we shall discover spiritual wisdom and guidelines for dealing with life in our
uncertain times.

Session 3: THE HISTORY AND MYSTERY OF YIZKOR: WISDOM FROM OUR ANCESTORS
Yizkor—the prayer traditionally called Hazkarat Neshamot—provides people with a chance to
remember and honor deceased loved ones. This presentation shall explore the background
and historical development of Yizkor, and the ways in which our tradition has traditionally
seen this prayer as a way of connecting with ancestors in the world beyond. In preparation
for Yizkor this Shavuot, we shall discover new ways of thinking about Yizkor, and the
tradition of the memorializing of family members.

All sessions will be taught via Zoom using a series of colorful graphic images to
highlight the texts we are studying.
